Course overview

This course is ideal if you work in an educational setting to support the teaching and learning of children and pupils.?The Foundation Degree is designed to provide a flexible and accessible route to higher education for associate professionals through working with employers.

The course is designed to underpin and develop the role of those supporting teaching and learning through intermediate level study.

This course can also provide a foundation for later progression towards gaining a BA (Hons) degree or Qualified Teacher Status. The course is run at the Bognor Regis Campus with attendance one day per week.

Indicative modules

Child Development

This module will support you to gain knowledge and understanding of a range of theories relating to the cognitive, physical, social and emotional development of children and young people. It covers key learning theorists and how their ideas have influenced pedagogy and practice.

Curriculum Studies

This module will explore the issues and aims of curriculum planning for the 21st century. It will consider wider issues related to the curriculum for example the ongoing debate concerning the balance of knowledge and skills. It will explore the principles of taking account of children’s voice in their learning and ?the concept of personalised learning through tracking, assessment, target setting and planning.

Research Skills

You'll complete an Independent Project in your third year. You'll develop a research question, supported by a review of the current literature in the chosen field and critically discuss appropriate research methodologies. You will conduct fieldwork related to your?chosen research question, analyse results and draw conclusions that?impact?your practice.

Mathematics and Literacy

Two double modules focus?specifically on mathematics and literacy. These modules enable you to gain a secure grounding in the theories associated with development in literacy and mathematics and develop students’ critical knowledge and understanding of how to provide rich and varied learning activities, in these areas, which best meet the needs and interests of the children and young people.

You will complete two modules each semester. These may be single modules (15 credits) or double modules (30 credits)

A wide range of appropriate teaching and learning strategies will be used during the course. These will include

  1. Lectures

    Lecturers usually take the form of a tutor, or outside expert, giving?input to a group of students.
  2. Seminar sessions

    ?Seminar sessions can be tutor-led or student-led and they provide you with the opportunity to discuss your views and opinions on issues and themes being explored in modules.
  3. Workshops

    These are usually practical sessions, where you will be asked to work with other students to complete a practical task. Sometimes these tasks involve discussion and formulation of a group response to the task, at other times you may be involved in a more structured presentation, dance, drama, scientific enquiry, maths investigation or fieldwork.?
  4. Tutorials

    These are sessions where the module tutor will work with you on an individual basis, or in a small group, to support you with any personal learning or research you are engaged in.
  5. Work-Based Learning – WBL

    All the modules on the FdA TLS have WBL tasks attached to them.?WBL tasks are activities linked to the taught sessions you attend at university that are to be undertaken in your workplace.?


Each module carries with it an assessed assignment. Across the FdA TLS different methods of assessment are used.? The assessments for the programme include an e-portfolio, essays, presentations, lesson plans, rationales and information booklets.
