“I chose the University of Chichester because of the small community feel; small class sizes advance your learning faster and everyone is friends with everyone! My favourite thing about the campus is the lecturers, they are so friendly and accommodating that you always feel at home. The mathematics course is excellent as well, especially the employability skills that are integrated into each module, as it can sometimes be a minefield to decide what you would like to pursue after graduating. When I leave, I hope to go into software development and data analytics, which has sparked my interest during the statistical methods modules I have completed.”

This course has been accredited by the Institute of Mathematics and its applications, which means that all graduates meet the educational requirements to become chartered mathematicians.

This?course will:

Indicative modules

This programme has a core of pure Mathematics linked with modules from applied Mathematics, statistics, and operational research. However within the course, you will be able to decide whether to specialise in?a certain branch of Mathematics or to keep your options open by maintaining a broad range of modules.

Year One:

Introduction to Statistical Theory

This module introduces you to data presentation, descriptive statistical analysis, use of statistical tables and hypotheses testing.

Discrete Mathematics

In this module, you will mainly focus on introductory?combinatorics?and in particular counting techniques which will be useful in future modules such as probability and random variables. ??

Calculus I

This module builds on the material covered at A level and introduces some new fundamental areas of mathematics. Differential Calculus will be extended and you will start the study of the applications of differentials.

Applied Mathematics

You'll be introduced?to the study of the motion of bodies (including the special case in which bodies remain at rest) in accordance with the general principles first articulated by Sir Isaac Newton and Galileo Galilei.?

Complex Numbers and Differential Equations

This module introduces you to mathematical communication and modelling using complex numbers, linear difference and differential equations.?

Linear Algebra?

This module introduces you to modelling using systems of linear equations, basic and advanced matrix algebra.

Calculus II

This module builds on the material covered at A level and introduces some new fundamental areas of mathematics. Differential Calculus will be extended and you will start the study of the applications of differentials.

Probability and Random Variables

This module introduces you to modelling and draws on probability theory and probability distributions to solve business, engineering, science, and social problems

Year Two:

Statistical Methods

This module builds on the first-year module Introduction to Statistical Theory and looks at the central limit theorem, paired and independent samples t-test and their non-parametric equivalents.

Applications of Probability

This module aims to develop techniques in the use of probability in real-world contexts. Exploration of the theoretical mathematical models used to describe patterns of events that occur in time, and in space.

Mathematical Analysis

This module introduces one of the fundamental areas of mathematics called analysis. Analysis can be described as a field that covers all topics which depend on the concept of limits.

Network Analysis

Network analysis provides the foundational knowledge and understanding to apply weighted and directed graphs?to solve real-life problems of connectivity, network flow, braced frameworks and optimal routes.

Calculus III

This module builds on the material covered within the first-year calculus courses. Calculus will be extended to functions of more than one variable and applications of partial differentiation and multiple integrals.

Complex Analysis

This is an introduction to complex analysis which is fundamental to higher-level mathematics. The main focus during this module will be how ideas such as differentiation extend to the complex variable setting. ?

Plus two from

Group Theory

This module introduces you to sets, functions, and operations; and examples of sets studied include sets of integers, functions, and matrices. The module also?explores the algebraic structure that is revealed by all possible pairs of the elements of a set when combined using an operation.

Time Series Analysis

A time series is a sequence of data that has been recorded in time order. The goal of this module is to try and understand how consecutive data points in a time series are dependent on each other. This dependence then allows us to create statistical models which can be used to forecast future values.

Further Applied Mathematics

Building on the techniques introduced in level 4 applied mathematics module, this?looks to develop a deeper understanding of the field of applied mathematics.

Year Three:


In this module, we look at the theory and techniques for optimises an objective function subject to some constraints. The ideas developed in the module are widely applicable to many other subjects such as engineering which regularly face optimisation problems.?

Advanced Calculus

This module follows from the Calculus modules in levels 4 and 5 and continues the study of calculus and associated applications. Here we link Linear Algebra and calculus to investigate vector functions; extend our knowledge to include functions of a complex variable and further develop an understanding of the solutions of differential equations.

Applied statistics

This module looks at the practice of statistics using real-world datasets and statistical software. Statistical methods such as hypotheses testing and regression analysis are applied to the real datasets, and the results interpreted and reported in a professional and academic style.

Number Theory

Number theory is the study of whole numbers. Number facts have intrigued most people at some stage in their education, and in addition to its inherent fascination, number theory has turned out to have practical applications in recent years such as encryption.

Mathematics Project

In this module, you will pursue and manage an individual study in mathematics and become familiar with the major concepts and developments in the chosen field.? The mathematics project is designed to enable you?to?explore an interest not otherwise covered by the modules you have previously taken, or explore a topic drawn from one of those courses, but to be taken in greater depth or?different directions.?

Within this module, we will study algorithms that allows computers to learn and improve from experience. The importance of this topic to many modern technologies cannot be overestimated.

Advanced Game Theory

Game theory tries to model how decision markers interact during situations of conflict or cooperation.? The implications of this theory are widespread and have had a significant impact on many subjects including economic, biology and computer sciences.

Operations Research

Operations research is a field of mathematics that seeks to optimise decision-making policies. The theory and problem-solving techniques developed in this field are widely applied in business, government and the military.??
