Entry requirements:

  • An honours degree at 2:2 or higher
  • If English is not your first language then English language proficiency required is IELTS 6.5 (with no element less than 5.5) – or equivalent qualification.


Course content

Course overview

This Postgraduate Certificate has been designed for those?interested in gaining accreditation and specialist knowledge in the education of children and adults on the autism spectrum. ?Through critical debate it explores the current understanding of autism and evaluates how theory and research has been applied to educational provision and practices.

Why study this degree?

The education of children and young adults on the autism spectrum has been a key area for development on government agendas and in local authority education policies.? As educationalists we need to rethink how children and young adults on the autism spectrum are learning in inclusive classrooms, how we recognise their skills and abilities and create opportunities for them to have a say in how they learn.

Indicative modules

Autism Education: Theory and Practice (30 Credits)*

This module will have a strong focus on current debates and research relevant to:

  • an overview of the historical concept of autism;
  • the neurobiology of autism; learning and development; neurodiversity, difference or deficit?;
  • autism in girls;
  • autism and ethnicity;
  • sensory integration;
  • empathy and anxiety;
  • family response to diagnosis;
  • an introduction to research methodologies and critical writing skills.

The module will encourage you to gain insights into the diversity of autistic people’s experiences and will be led by experts with personal, practitioner and academic experience of autism. You? will have an opportunity to develop your knowledge and skills by relating their personal and/or professional experience and the assignments to your workplace.

Autism Education: Advances in Teaching and Learning (30 Credits)*

This module explores current understanding about teaching pupils and adults on the autism spectrum across the age range (0 – 25 years) and evaluates approaches to teaching and learning that promote inclusive practice. Topics will include:

  • developing communication through play and the creative arts;
  • creating inclusive classrooms;
  • working together with parent carers;
  • personalising learning;
  • enabling the pupil/adult voice;
  • the ethics of autism treatments and interventions;
  • assessing progress and achievement;
  • therapeutic interventions;
  • transition planning;??
  • planning and implementing research in the workplace and leading practice for change.

The module will encourage you to develop your knowledge and skills and gain insights into the diversity of individual’s experiences in different educational settings by related your personal and/or professional experience and the assignments to your workplace.

Teaching and assessment


The course?is based at the?Bognor?Regis Campus. Taught sessions will take place on alternate?Tuesday evenings and one Saturday in each semester.


Assessments equate to 6,000 words for each 30 credit module. Each module has a distinct criteria for each assessment based on the modules core content. You will be encouraged to complete assignments that are linked to your workplace practice and personal interest. Assessed work? typically includes oral presentations,? case studies, observational studies, literature reviews and action research.
