Entry Requirements and Fees

Entry requirements:

  • Normally candidates will have an?honours?degree at 2.2 or above in a subject where the content is at least 50% science.?
  • The course?co-ordinator?welcomes contact from applicants who would like to discuss the suitability of their degree and their specialist options.?
  • There are various subject knowledge enhancement courses available for students who need to improve their subject knowledge in specific areas.?
  • These can also be discussed, either before application or at interview.?
  • All candidates must have achieved grade C / 4 or above in?GCSE?English and?Maths.?
  • You will be required to attend an interview and demonstrate a good understanding of the profession
  • GCSE?Equivalency:?We would normally expect applicants to have taken and passed the full?GCSE?course?however in some circumstances we do accept equivalent qualifications or equivalency tests. If you are unable to?enrol?for the full?GCSE?course, please contact?Admissions?to discuss which equivalent qualifications we may accept.
  • If English is not your first language then English language proficiency required is an overall IELTS score of 7.0 (including 7.0 in academic writing) other components no less than 6.5 – or equivalent qualification.

At times you will doubt yourself and wonder why you are putting yourself through this. However, the rewards are fulfilling, especially when you are making a difference to a child’s education and life. If you want to become a teacher then you must be willing to do things you’ve never done, the end results feel amazing! Believe, be positive and as William Ward said ‘if you can imagine it, then you can achieve it; if you can dream it then you can become it’- good luck in becoming a Science teacher!?


You will not be disappointed, there will be a moment whether its 8 weeks or 8 months into the course where everything was finally worthwhile. A child will say something out of the blue that surprises you or makes you break into fits of giggles and it makes all the pain of paperwork, hormonal teenagers and crowd control worth it. Don't worry about the small stuff, allow yourself to make mistakes and before long it will be your turn to write this.

Course overview

Our diverse and enhanced course??has the core aim of training the next generation of inspiring and passionate teachers, who have a passion to engage young people in learning science.

The PGCE in Secondary Science will allow you to select a subject specialism:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics

You’ll be trained to teach the most up-to-date specifications in Key Stages 3 and?4 ?as well as within?your subject specialism (Biology, Chemistry or Physics) to Key Stage 5. At the end of this one-year degree, you’ll be ready to confidently begin teaching in a secondary school.

Course structure

The subject-specific element of the course is delivered at a nearby partner school and is complemented by a Professional Studies programme, which is based at our Bognor Regis campus.

The subject studies focus on turning a good understanding of educational theory into outstanding performance in the classroom. You’ll ask:

  • How do children learn?
  • How do I?ensure they are making progress?
  • How can I increase their achievement and challenge them to reach their potential?
  • How do I plan for learning and then how do I know if the children have achieved the desired outcome?

To develop these skills and many others we use a mixture of input from the course leader, from your peers, visiting speakers, group work and tasks, practical sessions and use videos of you teaching your peers.

You’ll explore learning strategies and how to plan and achieve the best progress for the children you teach.

  • Qualify as a teacher in one year - this course includes Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), allowing you to teach in any state-funded school in the UK and beyond
  • The course will allow you to teach Key Stages 3 and 4 as well as A level (ages 11 to 19)

Learning Resource Centre facilities

Our Learning Resource Centre is at the heart of the Bognor Regis campus.? It hosts a modern library service with areas for quiet and silent study on both floors.? We offer a substantial collection of books, journals and other materials to help you further your research. A range of study areas for group and quiet study including Wi-Fi areas for laptop use are available, or you can use our open access PC and Mac areas.?We use an electronic learning environment with an expanding portfolio of online library resources from anywhere at any time.

Also situated in the Learning Resource Centre is the Support and Information Zone to help with any enquiries, over 80 open access work stations and Costa Coffee.? An equipment loans centre offers laptops, tablets and other electronic devices for short and long-term loans.

The programme’s delivered full-time over 38 weeks with 70% practical school experience in established partner schools and 30% university-based time, divided between Professional Studies and subject study.

This experience provides you with the opportunity to work alongside serving teachers, learning about the broader roles and skills of teachers and other school staff.


The course is assessed through observation during teaching placements and written assignments.?

To gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) students need to complete three 4,000 word assignments at FHEQ level 7 (Masters), and two blocks of School Experience.

Costs incurred during School Experience

Over the duration of your course, you will spend 24?weeks on placement. These school experiences are organised?in our partnership schools which extend across East & West Sussex, Hampshire and Isle of Wight and into Surrey. Travel to placements, which can be by car or public transport, varies but your commute?will not?usually?exceed?1 hour?from your term-time address to the placement school (assuming your term-time address is within our partnership area).?

Students not in receipt of a government bursary may receive a contribution towards travel costs depending upon the distance.

Whilst on School Experience appropriate professional dress will be required.

Students may wish to purchase a laptop/tablet to use?whilst on school experience as?schools are not required to provide these.?

Our Schools Partnership?network

We work with hundreds of partnership schools and?organisations?covering a wide area including?West Sussex, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, East Sussex and the Surrey border. These partners are based in rural and urban settings and cover a varied range of school types.?

How the placements work

Around 70%?of the course is spent in school, with your time divided mainly between two contrasting placements. You'll also complete a?week's training in a primary school (Key?Stage 2). Gaining experience in a mix of settings will help you to develop the skills required to confidently start a career in teaching.?

The University will find?placements?for you.?Great care is taken to place you in schools that will support you?and prepare you thoroughly for a career in teaching.?

Support?during your placements

School?experience is invaluable?to trainee teachers. That's why we take steps to ensure you are well?supported. We provide mentor training in our partnerships schools so you can learn from and build relationships with?serving teachers. You'll also have the full support of the teaching staff at the University while you're out on placement.
