Bilingual Education, CLIL and EMI

We provide participants with the background to current issues in CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) teaching contexts and bilingual provision and explore ways of teaching content through the medium of English (EMI).?

Participants will learn about pedagogical methods, strategies, techniques and innovations in Education related with CLIL and how to put CLIL into practice.

?Programme Content

Our CLIL programmes focus on:

  • Practical ideas to scaffold content and language in the classroom
  • Planning and supporting language demands: BICS and CALP
  • The place of thinking skills
  • Test instruments and assessment procedures which can be used in the CLIL classroom
  • Review of a range of books, internet and print resources for the participants’ classes
  • Materials development
  • Creating a language-rich classroom environment: word walls, timelines, anchor charts, posters, etc.?
  • Cooperative Learning
  • Establishing cross-curricular links: practical ideas to connect Science, Literacy, Arts and Crafts or P.E.
  • ICT resources for the classroom
  • Basic discourse analysis in key curriculum areas
  • Vocabulary-building activities

In addition, we will address Classroom Language Improvement and Language for Managing the Classroom.? Our programme will include a School Attachment Placement.


  • To explore in practical ways the materials and methodology appropriate to CLIL;
  • To consider the qualities and skills required by teachers involved in CLIL;
  • To consider the modes of delivery and types of classroom interaction most appropriate to CLIL;
  • To enable participants to design content lesson plans taught in English;
  • To enable participants to create materials for classroom use in teaching content lessons in the CLIL classroom;
  • To build participants’ confidence in the professional use of English in the classroom;
  • To practise language needed to teach specialist subjects in English;
  • To enable participants to become reflective practitioners as teachers and to develop their critical thinking skills as classroom teachers.

Learning Resources

Our Learning Resources Centre is?a whole building dedicated specifically to learning resources, where far from the traditional materials of a library, participants will find resources from and to be used in schools, for every subject and curricular level.

Approaches to Learning

We will use active learning methods, involving practical activities, problem-solving strategies, reflection and developing Critical Thinking strategies.? Our programme will examine examples of good pedagogic practice both in the UK and elsewhere.??
